The recent Hay Festival in Dhaka was a rare treat in many ways. Meeting some of the South Asian literary luminaries was a delight as expected, but meeting the ‘protesters’ of the Dhaka Hay Festival added a dimension to my experience that I was not prepared for.

This past Saturday (12th May) was a sad day, extremely sad day. I opened the newspaper to headlines of deaths in road accidents across the country. I opened the TV channels to numerous talk shows about what a sad state of affairs we live in.

They are just too powerful – but are they? <em>(In memory of all those we lost in road accidents)</em>

I grew up in this country accepting road accidents to be a fact of life — something you read about, something you hear of, something that sometimes comes close to home but never quite hits it. You just learn to live with it and hope for the best.
